population, notwhitstandng the wages of immigrants that reached the continent in the
second half of XX Century, is still of British descent. Therefore, English language is set
of as the basic language of this country. Australian
English presents its own appearance. As it was necessary to adopt many new words to
describe an environment very different from England (fauna, flora, geography, weather,
encounter with aborigine, isolation), many English words followed a particular evolution
in Australia. |

Some words have even disappeared already
from the British Islands and are only kept in Australia. Many other words are taken from
native languages, such as boomerang, dingo, kangaroo, etc. Australian English in general
presents slower rhythms and plain intonations that the standard from London.
In New Zealand, the main characteristics of English are
their big resemblance to Australian English and the influence of maorí over English
spoken in the North island, notably different form the South island. Likewise, New
Zealanders often speak faster and usually dont pronounce all the vowels. |
