Established in 1969, this family run school
is located in 2 fine old buildings close to the University in Clifton, in the Bristol
area. The school is well equipped with 17 classrooms, 2 language laboratories /self access
centres, 2 computer rooms, common rooms and gardens. Bristol is a lively, exciting city
and has all the attractions of London and yet it is easy to live here. In Bristol,
students can walk from their accommodation to the school, to theatres, concert halls,
pubs, restaurants and clubs. It is a major university city. There are more than 50,000
English students studying here, so there is plenty of student life.
Many students choose to study at ELC Bristol
before going on to University in the UK. Others are here because they need English for
their work. All of the ELC's students are individuals. The centre does not accept groups
nor juniors nor part-time students. This helps to ensure a unique atmosphere among the
students. Maximum class size: 12; average class size: 10. Due to demand, the class size in
some afternoon electives can occasionally reach 14.
The ELC Bristol offers different types of
courses: General English, Cambridge Examination Preparation, English Foundation
(preparation for university entrance -this course includes General English and IELTS
preparation) and Combination courses. As there are students from so many different
countries with different linguistic problems, each student is given an individual
self-study plan by his/her class teacher. Work can include grammar reinforcement,
listening and pronunciation practice, additional examination practice and so on.
The ELC Bristol offers different options of
accommodation: Homestay accommodation, Self-catering options and University Residence. The social programme is
organised by the school's own Social Co-ordinator, assisted by teachers in the school.
Some activities require a charge for admission and/or transport. These are organised on a
pay-as-you-go basis. Many activities are free. Students at The English Language Centre may
also use all the facilities of the University of Bristol Students' Union, with all its
clubs and societies - the perfect opportunity to follow their interests and make English friends.
