Since 1972, the Torquay International School (TIS) has been offering courses in English to people aged 16 to 80 from more than 65 countries. It is located just a few minutes on foot from Torquay town centre and is surrounded by large gardens and a volley ball court. The facilities, resources and services include: 20 classrooms, library and internet centre with free computer/internet access, free wireless internet, student lounge with plasma screen TV and DVD/video facilities, audio and video equipment, wireless Internet throughout the school, and much more.

TIS General English courses are designed to help students achieve fluency, accuracy and confidence.  Classes are small, maximum 19 for most of the year and 12 in July and August although in reality the classroom averages are smaller.  The minimum age is 16 years old at all times, but once again, in reality the age groups of the students is more likely to be between 25 and 50.   Courses are offered at all levels from Elementary to Advanced.  Course lengths vary from 1 week to one year.   There are also special focus courses to be chosen to combine with General English options, such as Communication skills, Business, Exam Preparation, Literature, Introduction to British Law, Introduction to contemporary British Culture  and others when available.  Examination courses include preparation for IELTS, FCE, CAE, CPE, TOEIC and TOEFL. 

TIS also offers a wide range of courses for executives, business, commerce and industry, such as Intensive Business English, English for Law, English for International Banking and Finance, and Tailor-made Group Courses for Seniors (suitable for 50+ age groups).

There is also a very wide variety of accommodation options, including 3 categories of homestay (many with private bathroom), hotels, a student residence and fully equipped apartments.  All the accommodation is constantly and carefully  the Accommodation Manager who has been managing the school accommodation for more than 20 years. 

The social programme is designed to help put the students in contact with other students and widen their experience of different nationalities and customs.  It includes visits to historic places, trips to other towns, social evenings, sailing or swimming activities, etc.
