Colchester English Study Centre, or CESC, is in
Colchester, a lively, historic university town, located less than an hour from London by
train. Set up in 1969, CESC is accredited by the British Council and is an exams centre
for IELTS and the University of Cambridge ESOL exams.
CESC offers a choice
of English language courses, including General English, Cambridge ESOL Exam Preparation,
IELTS Preparation, Business English, Teacher Training, Legal English, English for
Medicine, and Fifty Plus courses. Students study in small classes with experienced,
well-qualified teachers. In General English (the main course), students study the 4
language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), with a focus on listening and
speaking in class. Classes start on Mondays (except on Bank Holidays), in groups of up to
13 students, at all levels (seven, from beginner to advanced, based on the Common European
Framework of Reference for languages). This course, which is held for 20 lessons a week,
usually in the morning, can also be taken with options (with Conversation, with Business,
with Writing, etc.).
As well as its
teaching programme, Colchester English Study Centre offers an exciting social programme,
which includes evening activities and excursions. In addition, CESC offers other services, like a library, a
self-access centre and computer rooms. The library offers a
wide range of English fiction and non-fiction books, the latest newspapers and magazines,
coursebooks, and language reference titles. The self-access centre is equipped with audio
player-recorders, which students can use either to improve their English pronunciation, or
to listen to the tapes and CDs which accompany readers. CESC has two computer rooms
and 30 computers with learning software, Office, and communications software (Yahoo, MSN,
etc). The computers have headphones and microphones, and are connected to a printer /
scanner, which students can use free of charge. Many computers have fonts installed for
other languages (Japanese, Chinese, etc). The school and garden area are Wi-Fi hotspots;
students with laptops can connect to our wireless network free of charge.
Many students prefer to stay with homestay host
families in and around Colchester, which gives them the opportunity to practise their
English and to find out more about British culture out of class time. There are also other
accommodation options available. Since 1988, CESC has run a junior residential and
homestay summer programme for 12-18 year-olds, International Language Holidays, also
British Council accredited, which runs programmes at Framlingham, Ipswich, and
Clacton-on-Sea.
