ebaaa246-2.jpg (9182 bytes)For over 45 years students have come to Melton College to learn English and to live in York, one of Britain's most interesting cities. York was an important city for the Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans. Later it was, for a time, the capital of England and it is still the capital of the North. Surrounded by its medieval walls, the centre is dominated by the awe-inspiring 13th century York Minister, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Today, York is a vibrant university city, packed with restaurants, cafes, English pubs, bars and shops, all a short walk or an even shorter bus ride from the college. For entertainment, there are theatres and cinemas, nightclubs and live music. York is full of interesting specialist shops, from arts and crafts to famous high street fashion stores. For the more active, York offers golf and tennis, horse-riding and rowing, swimming pools and sports centres. ebaaa246-2.gif (18154 bytes)Melton College is close to the city but away from the crowds. Located just a few minutes from the centre of York, students can take full advantage of the city in their free time, for shopping, socialising and sightseeing. At the college, you enjoy the space to relax, the peace to study and the assurance of quality which comes with experience. Melton College is in a carefully converted Victorian building with extensive private landscaped grounds. In the beautiful garden students can study in peace, play tennis, basketball and table-tennis or just relax! It is possible to make use of the large terrace for barbecues and other social activities. The college also has superbly equipped classrooms, a lecture theatre, a library, a computer room, common rooms, conservatories, a self-access centre, a cafe, and free Wi-Fi access.

ebaaa246-5.jpg (11027 bytes)The college arranges high quality English courses for all ages and for all levels. There are general English courses, adult and junior vacation courses, courses for the over 50's and courses for groups, often with special additional programmes. General English Courses are aimed at adults who want to improve their language skills for educational or professional purposes. Many of them go on to take an IELTS exam in order to continue their studies at a British University. You will take 15 or 22.5 hours of tuition per week, plus up to 7.5 hours' guided self study, in groups with no more than 12 participants per class. Minimum age required is 16 and you can start any Monday. Every student is assigned a personal tutor to monitor progress and to offer encouragement and advice. These tutorials are included in the fees but they are not considered as tuition time. The college also offers Summer courses, Gold courses (50+), IELTS preparation courses and Easter & October courses designed for kids and teenagers (11-18). Melton College is a major IELTS and Cambridge ESOL exam centre. It runs exams for its own students and for other schools and colleges in the area.

ebaaa246-4.jpg (11048 bytes)Most of the students choose to stay in a carefully selected host family. Living in an English household is a wonderful way to practise your English. As a guest in homestay accommodation you will have a single room, you will eat with the family and be able to join in with family life. If you are sharing the family with another student they will not speak your language. On the other hand, if you require other type of accommodation, the college can also arrange hotel, bed and breakfast and self-catering accommodation for adult students.

In addition to classroom-based lessons, the staff arranges a variety of social events, excursions, activities and accompanied visits to places of interest in York. Each week includes two afternoon or evening events. These may include visits to York Minster, the National Railway Museum, the Jorvik Centre, the Yorkshire Museum, pub visits, social evenings, etc. Weekend excursions are arranged on a regular basis to London, Edinburgh and the Lake District, as well as to many places of interest in Yorkshire.
