Academic English Studies (AES)
at Lewis & Clark
English Language Courses in Oregon, USA
The Academic English Studies (AES) program offers full-time
(18-20 hours per week) instruction for low-intermediate through advanced English language
students. Up to 24 undergraduate elective credits may be applied toward a Bachelor of Arts
degree at Lewis & Clark. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes closely
approximate undergraduate classes in teaching style, content, and expectations. The
curriculum is designed to assist students in the development of essential language skills,
appropriate learning strategies, and the cross-cultural awareness and sensitivities
considered necessary for successful completion of their undergraduate or graduate studies.
As part of the AES program, students improve their reading, writing, listening, and
speaking skills in AES classes, and they observe or audit undergraduate classes at the
same time. Advanced students might also take one or two undergraduate courses for credit
along with their AES classes.
The AES program offers courses during both semesters of the
academic year; an intensive summer session is also scheduled.
The Lewis & Clark campus is located approximately six
miles (9.66 km) from downtown Portland, Oregon, in a safe residential area. Lewis
& Clark is a private nationally regarded liberal arts institution of higher education.
It is known for it's global outlook, close student-faculty relationship, and service to
the community; it is proud of it's distinguished teachers, performers, researchers and
alumni.
