The Intensive American Language Center (IALC) at Washington State University provides intensive English language instruction for international students who wish to improve their language skills for academic, professional, or personal reasons.

The IALC provides intensive English language instruction in different areas: Main Program/Academic Preparation, for students preparing to enter universities and colleges in the U.S.; Advanced Skills, for graduate and undergraduate students attending Washington State University who want or need to enhance their English language skills; and Specialized Programs, for individuals who want to participate in short-term study abroad programs at WSU, or who would like to improve their general English skills.

IALC has a lab with 17 modern, up-to-date PC-compatible computers. Students can use these computers to write papers for classes, check email, practice English on the Internet, listen to music, and watch videos. Students can bring their own laptop computer and connect to the Internet in this lab. In fact, IALC has an introductory class using computers that meets in the lab. Also, other IALC classes sometimes meet in the computer lab for special activities or projects.

The IALC is part of WSU, a large, state university offering 245 fields of study. Students at the IALC have access to all the student facilities such as the recreation center, the libaries, and student health services. For undergraduate study, students who pass Level 5 at the IALC are exempt from WSU’s TOEFL requirement. For most graduate programs, students who pass the Level 6 classes at the IALC are TOEFL exempt.
