University ESL Program at the Central Washington University
English Language Courses in Washington State, USA
The University
English as a Second Language (UESL) program at Central Washington University (CWU) has
five levels. Students will have opportunities to develop their reading, writing, speaking,
listening, and grammar skills in each course and at each level. Teachers often take
students on field trips or create out-of-the class opportunities and assignments.
There are four kinds of classes. For Levels 1-4, the UESL has
an Oral Communication class that teaches listening and speaking skills, a Block class
which focuses on reading, writing and grammar skills, and an Elective class. The elective
classes that students can choose from may include computer classes, TOEFL preparation,
TOEIC preparation, English or history through movies, film-making, vocabulary/idioms,
speaking workshop, travel, business, and different kinds of grammar classes.
For Level Five, the UESL program offers the visitation class
in place of oral communication. In this class the English language students attend an
undergraduate CWU class as a visitors and they meet once a week with one of the UESL
Program's teachers to discuss what they are learning. This helps them prepare for entering
an undergraduate program at an American university.
The CWU campus has a lot to offer the UESL's students so they
can enjoy their student life in the United States (roommates, residence hallas, dining
halls, etc.)
There are many opportunities to see
more of Washington State. Students can go on a UESL trip or an International Students'
Association trip. Or each student can travel himself/herself to various places. Yakima is
only 45 minutes south of Ellensburg. About 1 hour away is "The Gorge," where
famous musicians play concerts all summer long. To find really big city life and
entertainment students only need to travel to the west for two hours to arrive in Seattle
or three hours to the east to arrive in Spokane.
