English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of
English Language Courses in Tennessee, USA
The University of Tennessee is one of the few state universities located in a
large city. With a population of more than 500,000, the Knoxville area supports
entertainment and cultural events, museums, and art galleries. Knoxville often ranks among
the nations top ten cities in surveys on quality of life.
For more than 25 years, the English Language Institute at the
University of Tennessee has helped thousands of people. The
Full-Time Intensive Program curriculum consists of three proficiency levels: basic,
intermediate, and advanced. Classes are limited in number of students. As a general rule,
the lower the proficiency level, the lower the number of students per class. Each student
has classes with emphasis on English Structure (Grammar), Writing/Composition (Rhetoric),
Reading and Vocabulary, Listening and Conversation.
Students also have elective classes, which vary from term to term; recent offerings have
included photography, Internet English, American movies, music, and art. Provision is made
for TOEFL preparation, and classes assist students in pronunciation, test-taking
strategies, U.S. culture orientation, and university study skills. Listening
comprehension students may practice each day with audio tape materials. One institutional
TOEFL is given in each term to all ELI students; the cost of this examination is included
in the tuition fee. The computer-assisted language learning laboratory is an important
part of each student's program. Multimedia software is available for 400+ hours of English
language study and practice. Students also can use the laboratory for E-mail, Internet
information retrieval and word processing.
ELI students who wish to live on-campus in a University dormitory must indicate so on
their ELI applications. They will then be sent a housing application. If off-campus
housing is preferred, the ELI offers limited assistance in finding accommodations.
Students also have a large selection of extracurricular activities and many opportunities
to make new friends.
