Creighton University has been providing
instruction in English as second language since 1979. Over the years, the program has
evolved into what is now the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI), offering five
eight-week terms of instruction in various levels of language skills. The primary
mission of the IELI is to help students attain English proficiency to enter the university
at the undergraduate or graduate level. The IELI also hosts special short-term group
programs for students from schools and universities overseas.
Housed on the Creighton campus, the IELI
students also take advantage of Creighton’s close proximity to downtown Omaha, the
center of a metropolitan area of over 800,000. Omaha is a leader in the information
technology industry and the home of five Fortune 500 companies.
The IELI curriculum includes 22 courses and 3 levels of
proficiency in English, from intermediate to advanced. These courses include reading,
writing, speaking/ listening, gramar and special topics. At the end of each eight-week
session, students are evaluated by their instructors and are promoted to the next level if
they have made sufficient progress. Students who successfully complete all of the IELI
courses will receive a certificate. Advanced students who attain a certain score on
the TOEFL may receive permission to take one or more credit courses at Creighton
University while enrolled in IELI.
IELI students may request lodging on campus. In this
case, they can take full advantage of Creighton activities, events, and—most
importantly—interactions with other students and faculty. Creighton’s
residence halls are in the heart of campus, next to popular campus locations such as the
Kiewit Fitness Center, the Java Jay and St. John's Church. Each residence hall is fully
furnished, complete with kitchens, study rooms, computer labs, laundry facilities and
internet access. The Office of International Programs staff also assists students in
finding suitable apartments or homestays if they are eligible to live off campus.
