Program in American Language Studies
English Language Courses in New Jersey, USA
The Program in American Language Studies (PALS) considers
that its primary objective is to provide English language instruction to non-native
English speakers for academic, professional, business, and social/acculturation purposes.
It strives not only to foster students' language competency in reading, writing, speaking,
and listening, but also to develop students' cultural understanding of the world at large,
and the United States in particular. Students range from homemakers, business
people, and corporate professionals, to matriculating and non-matriculating students.
PALS' students have access to the University's resources such as its libraries, language
labs, computer rooms, dorms, and dining and recreational facilities.
The PALS Intensive English Program provides full-time and
part-time English language and cultural instruction at eight proficiency levels (ranging
from beginners to advanced). Each year, instruction is delivered in five sessions, each of
seven weeks duration. Two additional 5 week supplementary sessions are offered
during summer. In order to provide competencies in reading, writing, listening and
speaking, the Intensive program is designed in modular format covering four major
disciplines: Reading/Writing, Applied Grammar, Phonology/Listening and Discussion. A
special course TOEFL Preparation is run for advanced students. Students can enroll in any
session. Students must be at least 17 years of age and should have proof of having
completed high school education.
Housing arrangements should be made before the student
arrives in the US. To reserve an on -campus dormitory room, it is necessary to contact the
PALS office by phone or email well in advance. Students of PALS also have access to a wide
variety of films, theater productions, and sporting events organized by Rutgers-New
Brunswick. During each session, PALS plans a special cultural event for its students.
