Established in 1981, the Maryville College ESL program is a serious language program designed to help students quickly acquire essential English skills.  Students from around the world come to Maryville to receive outstanding English language instruction and individual attention from both the ESL instructors and the Center for International Education advising staff.
 
The purpose of the ESL curriculum is to provide students with the academic and language skills essential to succeed in an American university, a business environment or for personal growth.  Instruction is given 25 hours a week and additional hours outside the classroom.  Class sizes are small, typically no more than 6-8 students per class.   The instructors are native speakers and hold master’s degrees.   Conditional admission into college (undergraduate program) is offered through the ESL program.  Students who move from the ESL program to begin their undergraduate studies, will get college credit toward their Maryville College degree for their ESL studies.
 
The ESL students gain full access to Maryville College’s campus facilities and can enjoy using the sports facilities, campus libraries, the student health clinic, wireless campus and computer labs with Internet access. A regular program of social activities is also arranged for ESL students and can include movies nights, shopping trips, hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains, whitewater rafting, and sightseeing.
