From modest
beginnings on what was largely farmland, the University of Waikato has grown to a student
population of about 13,000 of whom more than 4800 complete a qualification annually. Today
the University employs 2000 academic and support staff, making a significant contribution
to the local and national economy. Since the earliest days the University has worked
closely with iwi, particularly Tainui, to make the University accessible to Maori students
and to foster an environment of success. Now it is a truly New Zealand institution,
supporting the country's nation-building policies and reflecting the nation's identity.
Foreign students are welcomed at University of Waikato. The
team at Waikato International department can help these students to find the most suitable
courses for their needs and interests, providing assitance with the initial application
process and manages all of the ongoing international student support. Regarding ESL, there
are several options for studying English language with the University of Waikato Pathways
College. You can choose to study English in Hamilton or Tauranga.
The Pathways
College Hamilton centre is situated in the main University of Waikato campus. Hamilton is
one of the cleanest city rivers in the world, a major centre of the lush, green Waikato
region, and a student city - the main campus of the University of Waikato is just minutes
away from the city centre. Hamilton attracts students from all over the world and has more
than 25,000 students, because it provides the benefits of a big city but without the
stress, offering s a good environment for both study and relaxation. On the other hand,
the Tauranga Pathways College is combined with the University of Waikato's Tauranga
campus, located in central downtown Tauranga. The campus is within walking distance of a
range of shops, cafe's and bars. Tauranga itself is formed around a beautiful harbour,
while five minutes drive away you will find the surf beach of 'Mount Maunganui' with
clean, safe and white sand beaches. A regional commercial centre and thriving tourist
resort, Tauranga boasts many leisure activities including all manner of water sports -
swimming, diving, surfing, yachting and wind surfing. Further afield you can bush walk in
the Kaimai's, swim with the dolphins or simply take time out in a hot pool. With a
temperate climate, you can enjoy outdoor activites all year round.
The Pathways
College offers different English courses, including the Certificate of Attainment in
English Language (CAEL), an academic English programme to develop English proficiency in
reading, writing, listening, and speaking in formal and informal contexts; General English
Language (GE), an exciting opportunity for people from around the world to learn everyday
English in an English speaking environment; Groups (International), a customised programme
for groups that combine English with almost any other activity; IELTS Preparation -the
University of Waikato is the IELTS testing centre for the Waikato region-, and the
Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies, a two-semester, full-time academic
programme to prepare students from non-English speaking backgrounds for university study
in New Zealand.
Regarding accommodation, there are several options available
to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students over 18 years at the time they plan
to start their studies can apply for any of the following accommodation options: Homestay
(stay with a family), sharing a house/flat (students share facilities), searching for
off-campus accommodation online, Halls of Residence (dormitories) with three meals a day
