Spanish Language School in Mexico
The Instituto Benjamin Franklin de Yucatán has been
operating as a Mexican-North American Binational Center for Cultural Relations for the
past 40 years. The center is a non-profit organization to promote cultural and educational
exchanges between Yucatán and the rest of the world. Located in a colonial building in
the historic center of Mérida, the Institute´s facilities include classrooms with a
capacity of 20, a library, a video viewing room and snack bar. Staff members are willing
to adapt programs to the especific needs of their clients. Because of the
adaptability and flexibility of its Spanish Lenguaje program, The Institute Benjamin
Franklin of Yucatán appeals to a number of different clients, from university students
and travellers, to executives and other professionals.
The institute offers intensive Spanish courses
from as little as a week or as long as a year. Courses start every Monday the entire year
regardless of the course lenght. There are Intensive courses for students who have little
or no knowledge of Spanish, and the intermediate and advanced students may enroll in six
or eigth-week Spanish classes. Courses feature grammar and conversation classes as well as
guided tours to places of historic and cultural interest in the city. Students will be
administered placement exams upon arrival to determine their appropriate level.
The institute offers a number of Mexican
history courses. From Prehispanic times to present day. Students may also enroll in a
Mexican culture class with an emphasis on the maya, Mexican literature classes, and a
class on the socieconomic situation of México.The conversation classes offered are
designed jointly by the teacher and students. Academic credits can be arranged at
student`s request.
Homestays including three meals per day,
sheets, and towels, can be arranged by the Institute. There are also a number of
inexpensive hotels in Mérida, as well as apartaments and boarding rooms.
The environment is pleasant and supportive and
students will have the opportunity to practice their Spanish with Mexican Students. At the
end of each course, the Institute can provide interested students with penpals in order to
continue practicing their Spanish. Excursions to places of interest in Merida, the nearby
Maya ruins, beaches, and national parks are organized by the institute. The majority of
these excursions are available for an additional fee.
