Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School inspires and develops leadership, compassion, responsibility, respect for the environment and commitment to serve through adventure-based wilderness experiences led by a skilled, safety-conscious staff. Students can spend 15 to 85 days learning to surf on the warm-water breaks of the Pacific Ocean, or culturally immerse themselves in various Costa Rican communities to gain practical use of Spanish. They can also hike through the jungles of Central America and see things they've only read about in textbooks, explore the diverse coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea and whitewater raft down some of the most thrilling and beautiful rivers in the world.

CRROBS offers four distinct semester courses. All of which have been given academic credit in the United States and Canada. This is a considerable advantage to students' gap year or study abroad semester, because not only do they get to experience amazing parts of Central America, they also come out ahead scholastically. Gap years, common traditions in most parts of Europe are becoming more and more popular in the United States and Canada. High school graduates are feeling more comfortable taking a year off before starting college or university to get focused as well as gain international exposure. With the continuing globalization of the world economy, international experience is increasingly important both to employers and schools. As a Study Abroad school, CRROBS fundamentally believes that travel is educational and that the experiences, which come from traveling and studying abroad, are invaluable.

While Outward Bound programs have evolved from those conceived by Kurt Hahn over 60 years ago, the five core principles are still central to each and every program. These are: Challenge and Adventure, Compassion and Service, Social and Environmental Responsibility, Character Development, and Learning Through Experience
