Norwegian Language School in Norway
The Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies
(Institutt for lingvistiske og nordiske studier- ILN) offers Norwegian language courses to
international students at the University of Oslo, from levels 1 to 4. These courses are
offered to those who have been accepted as international students at the University of
Oslo. Others may apply for paid courses. Those who attend
Norwegian language courses at the University of Oslo receive student status, and may take
advantage of the benefits offered by the Student Welfare Association (Studentsamskipnaden
i Oslo). These Norwegian courses
can qualify students for general study competence in Norwegian. Level 3, NORINT0130, is
equivalent to the Norwegian language proficiency test (advanced level).
If the student already has some knowledge of Norwegian, it is
possible to take a placement test at the beginning of the semester to find out which level
would be most suitable for him/her. Attendance is mandatory. Students must attend at
least 75% of classes to be allowed to sit an examination. The examination dates are
available at the beginning of each semester. Please note that students will not get
credits for a course unless they take the examination.
Regarding paid courses, these courses are
available for foreign persons with an academic record who need formal competence in the
Norwegian language. Students have to qualify for admission to
the University of Oslo (except the Norwegian language requirements).
