Swedish Language School in Sweden

Uppsala International Summer Session (UISS) has organized summer courses in the Swedish language since 1963 for students, teachers, Swedish youth living abroad, translators, interpreters, administrative personnel etc. The most important course in the UISS is Swedish as a foreign language, which is organized on six levels. In addition to studying, students also enjoy living in Uppsala and participating in Swedish student life. The UISS is a non-profit organization, completely self-supportive.

All teachers within the UISS are qualified to teach at an academic level. The teachers of Swedish have taken an additional special program at the university in teaching Swedish as a foreign language. Courses are intensive and are intended for the serious and motivated student. The UISS teaches all classes at Vuxenskolan, a modern facility in the center of Uppsala. Computers are available for writing or e-mailing for a small fee. A wireless network connection is available for those who bring their own laptops.

Students can choose to take a tuition only option, which includes from 20 to 32 lessons per week, study visits, a guided tour of Uppsala, a student card for Uppsala and social events at school.  If prefered, students can choose a tuition plus option, which includes all features mentioned before and other ones like housing in single dormitory, lunch on class days, fieldtrips on Fridays, entrance fees on fieldtrips, sport activities (such as volleyball, soccer), evenings with guest speakers, evenings with Swedish singers, film evenings, etc.

Swedish is taught 4 days a week, with a minimum of 5 lesson hours a day. A basic orientation into cultural and social patterns and characteristics is integrated in the teaching of the Swedish language. Traditions and customs will be discussed also. Besides the Swedish language courses, it is possible to take afternoon classes in Swedish for two or three additional hours. There is also a Swedish course especially designed for expatriated young Swedes between 17 and 26 (Svenska för utlandssvenska ungdomar).

Once a year, UISS organizes courses in the Swedish language and culture in the north of Sweden. The winter session takes place in Jokkmokk, Lapland.
