Students who intend to pursue degree studies in Umeå but have no previous knowledge of the Swedish language can apply for undergraduate studies starting with a three-semester Foundation Course in Swedish. If they pass the final test in Swedish they are allowed to start their undergraduate studies.

The Foundation Course in Swedish lasts three terms in duration, 90 ECTS, and begins once a year in the middle of January (Spring Term). To fulfill the general admission requirements participants must submit documents from their upper secondary school education with a diploma corresponding to a Swedish education of the same level (gymnasium). Knowledge of English is proven by an internationally recognized English language proficiency test like TOEFL or IELTS for applicants who have not studied English for at least 8 years at the upper secondary level.
