|Self-Study Italian Courses
Fluenz Italian is an interactive program
based on a virtual one-on-one tutoring.
The program has been developed by a group of Harvard and
Cornell graduates who are passionate language learners and who felt there had to be a
better way to learn a language. The result of their work is ideal for those who seek
common sense explanations, sophisticated workouts that lead to real learning, and who
thrive on a great teacher to keep them focused and engaged.
On-screen tutor Sonia Gil, a Cornell graduate, guides you throughout the
program, blending full motion video explanations in English with a series of highly
engaging workouts, helping you to understand and speak Italian. The Fluenz system follows
three clear principles: 1) We learn best when we have a teacher. It's often
difficult to motivate yourself to learn on your own. By bringing a tutor to the
computer, all concepts are explained in a sensible way and you don't have to tackle
Italian all by yourself. 2) If you are an English speaker, it's easier and faster to
learn Italian by starting out in English. With Fluenz, every new word and grammar
structure is explained in English, from a perspective that will make the most sense to
English speakers who are learning Italian. 3) It's best to learn the most relevant
words in Italian right away. Fluenz focuses on the vocabulary needed to learn
the language in order to use it in practical, real-world travel and business situations.
Fluenz Italian Level 1
The first level of Fluenz Italian is a comprehensive introduction to the
language. Fluenz Italian is aimed at bringing learners to a level of fluency that
will allow them to successfully interact in the most common, real-world situations they
will face abroad, while at the same time laying the strongest possible foundation for
In thirty sessions, or the equivalent of two sessions a week
during an academic semester, the program covers essential verbs for describing activities,
asking questions, expressing desires and needs, and issuing commands in present and future
tenses, the ability to correctly form masculine and feminine constructions, the ability to
express time and location, how to formulate complex indications when giving directions
without making mistakes, and necessary vocabulary for surviving in the Italian-speaking
Fluenz Italian Level 2
The second level of Fluenz Italian builds upon the foundations established
in the previous level, greatly expanding the learner's range and complexity of expression
in such areas as key verbs, sentence formulations in past, present, and future tenses, the
ability to ask different kinds of questions and construct answers, how to issue important
commands, correctly use prepositions, how to express time, location, and give directions,
and necessary vocabulary for surviving in the Italian-speaking world. The second level
also covers the use of important articles and object pronouns, reflexive verbs, and
comparatives and superlatives.
For English speakers, the complexity of Italian verb
conjugations, word order, prepositions, object pronouns, and the infamous passť composť
tend to prove especially difficult. Italian 2 therefore spends considerable time on these
areas. Even learners who are familiar with the basic vocabulary related to restaurants,
shopping, transportation, and general location issues will find the work in these specific
grammatical areas to be extremely helpful for properly constructing Italian sentences.
